U-17 WC India 2017 : India's Matches To Be Shifted From Navi Mumbai To Delhi
Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium will host India U-17 football team's matches in the FIFA Under-17 World Cup instead of DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai as had initially been planned.
According to the group schedule posted on the FIFA website, the Group A matches are to be hosted by DY Patil Stadium and Group B by JN Stadium, Delhi. India being the hosts are likely to get placed in Group A.
However, due to the intervention of the Sports Ministry, AIFF are likely to request FIFA to shift India's matches to the capital. FIFA will announce the final match schedule on July 7 in Mumbai.
A top AIFF official revealed to The Tribune that since the Government is spending almost 15 crores on the U-17 World Cup, top politicians and bureaucrats are willing to attend the home team's matches and that is the reason why the games are shifted to Delhi.
“Since the match schedule hasn’t been announced and the teams haven’t been allocated to the six groups, the AIFF can always make the changes. We don’t think there would be any problem in convincing the FIFA and the local organizing committee about the rescheduling,” the official said to The Tribune.
“Look, the government has been spending a lot on the World Cup. It has already spent close to Rs 2 crore on the Indian team’s preparation. So, whatever the government will say, the AIFF has to follow. If the government wants India’s matches in Delhi, so let it be,” the official added.
The JN Stadium, Delhi will host a total of 8 games with the last one being on October 16th. No matches have been allocated after that keeping in mind the high pollution level in the city post Diwali.
