Sports Minister Vijay Goel: I Will Take Aizawl's Case Up At AIFF

Champions of India, Aizawl FC, received a massive boost in their quest for playing top-flight football in India when India's Sports Minister, Mr. Vijay Goel declared his support to their cause. Goel, who was in Kolkata to inspect preparations for the upcoming FIFA U17 World Cup said, "As far as the controversy between Aizawl FC and Indian Super League is concerned, I’m going to talk to the AIFF. Definitely, I would like to take their case up at AIFF."

The North-Easterners are the toast of Indian football, having staged an unlikely feat by clinching the 2016/17 I-League title ahead of big-spenders like Bengaluru FC, East Bengal, and Mohun Bagan. However, the AIFF, which is planning to replace the I-League with the Indian Super League in the next campaign, has not allocated a spot to the winning team, and have registered only the eight franchises and the three traditional powerhouses for the top flight. Enraged at the decision, the Aizawl management has decided to stage protests, organize demonstrations, picket AIFF offices and go on hunger strikes if they are not granted permission to play in the top-tier. A central minister’s public vote of support will only further their cause, and that is music to the ears of a major section of the local footballing community as well.

However, the minister did remark that he is yet to receive any official correspondence from Aizawl FC, but expressed genuine happiness at their miraculous win and said it would act as big boost to the footballing scenario in the North East.
