Ranjan Chowdhury Named As The New Coach of East Bengal After Injury Sidelines Mridul
Ever since Trevor James Morgan resigned, there has been no shortage of drama at East Bengal.
The three-member technical committee of Manoranjan Bhattacharya, Bhaskar Ganguly and Tushar Rakshit initially decided to replace Morgan with Bengal's Santosh Trophy winning coach, Mridul Banerjee.
But in an unfortunate turn of events, Mridul ruptured his Achilles tendon fibre tissue on the very first day of the job and had to be carried off the pitch. The injury meant that Mridul will require rest for atleast four weeks, making him doubtful the Federation Cup.
Although the club has retained him as the registered coach for the remainder of the season, the technical committee has appointed former assistant coach Ranjan Chowdhury as the new interim coach.
Chowdhury was an assistant to both Morgan and Colaco during their first stint at the club and also has the experience of coaching Kolkata outfit Mohammedan Sporting in the 2nd Divsion I-League.
Chowdhury will be at the East Bengal dugout when they next host Minerva Punjab FC in Barasat on Sunday followed by an away game against Mumbai FC six days later.
With AIFF's guidelines stating that a team can be given the leeway of working with a 'B' licence coach for about 9-10 days in a special scenario before selectiong a 'A' licence coach, it will be interesting to see who will be in East Bengal's dugout at the Federation Cup,since Ranjan Chowdhury doesn't have the required 'A' licence.
