5th placed Shillong Lajong host I-League debutants Chennai City FC, who are currently 9th in the standings in a Hero I-League match at the JN Stadium, Shillong on Tuesday.

Previous Games: Both sides had a successful last outing. While Shillong Lajong beat Mumbai FC 3-1 at home to secure their second win of the season on the trot last Saturday, visitors Chennai City notched up their maiden victory against Northeast side Aizawl FC 2-0 in Chennai on the same day.

Traveling and preparations: Chennai City reached Shillong on January 29 and the team will get hardly two training sessions to get accustomed to the conditions.

Team Morale: The Reds are on a high after registering two consecutive victories at home (against Minerva Punjab and Mumbai FC, respectively). The combinations upfront seem to be working well for Thangboi Singto’s side which has been among the goals in the last two matches. Chennai City too is confident going into the tie as it beat impressive Aizawl in the last game to set the tone for an exciting Shillong encounter.

Manager’s quote:

SLFC gaffer Thangboi Singto expressed confidence that his boys have now started to gel as a unit and the team simply needs to carry the momentum forward.

“At the start of the season the team needed time to gel and that has started to show. Since playing Minerva we have progressed and are in better shape and position to face Chennai. We have created more chances, but we also need to convert more of them because if you don’t take those opportunities it will cost you in the end,” Singto said even as he alerted his boys not to take the visitors lightly.

“Chennai may be league debutants but they have very experienced players,” Singto added.

Meanwhile, Chennai coach Robin Raja said his side is taking it one match at a time.

“Our squad was finalized only in December and five players arrived just before our first game, but as the matches have progressed the team is coming together and the win against Aizawl was what we needed,” Raja said.

Injury: Chennai City’s Karanjeet will miss out with an injury while Dan Ignat will be a 50/50 starter for Lajong on Tuesday. Zodingliana will also not be available for Lajong.
