A CK Vineeth hattrick inspired Bengaluru FC humbled Mumbai FC 3-0 in the 3rd Round of the 2016/17 I-League at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bangalore, on Wednesday.

The home side made two changes from their win against Chennai City FC, as Cameron Watson and Nishu Kumar were drafted in for Mandar Rao Dessai and Sena Ralte. Mumbai meanwhile made just one change; Hitesh Sharma starting in place of Farukh Choudhary.

It was expected to be a high-intensity tussle, but the first half was a drab engagement between the two sides.

The away side was more than happy to sit back and defend what came their way, while the Blues, despite dominating the ball, lacked the final penetrative delivery. Their best chance of the half came in the 28th minute when Sunil Chhetri threaded a neat ball to CK Vineeth, who blasted over with his left.

With no decent chances going either sides’ way, it looked like the players would go down the tunnel with a 0-0 scoreline, but Vineeth made amends for his earlier missed chance by firing his side into the lead. Udanta Singh’s nutmeg down the right found Cameron Watson in the box, who delivered a beautiful cross to the Kannur born man. Vineeth’s purple patch meant there was no chance the prolific 28-year-old was going to miss that and stabbed it with aplomb past Kattimani with the final kick of the first half.

The Blues, buoyed by the goal, came out for the second half with more attacking intent, and soon found the floodgates open. Vineeth doubled his personal and his sides’ tally just before the half-hour mark, after smashing Harmanjot Khabra’s low cross home.

And seven minutes later, the lively striker completed his treble. Turning smartly in the box after receiving the ball in the box, Vineeth slotted in from a tight angle to net the clubs’ first ever hattrick.
