This year’s IFA Shield will have a major surprise as for the first time the Kolkata Municipal Corporation would be fielding a team in the history-laden Shield.

The kit inauguration of the new team was conducted at the Municipal Corporation head office in Kolkata on Thursday in the presence of the Honourable Mayor of Kolkata Sovon Chatterjee. The kit has been specially designed by renowned fashion designer Agnimitra Paul. The team has been selected from the annual Mayors Cup football tournament which is held in Kolkata annually.

The team would have ex-footballer Aloke Das as their head coach, he will be assisted by Anjan Nath and the goalkeeping coach would be Prasanta Dora.

The unique thing about this whole thing through this team the Corporation has decided to honour ex-corporation employee Sirish Chandra Sarkar, better known in footballing circle as Habul Sarkar. More importantly for Indian football lovers he was art of the historic Mohun Bagan side which won the 1911 IFA Shield. It has been a noble gesture from the Kolkata Corporation’s end to honour a legendary triumph and one of their very own who was part of that triumph which is part of Indian football folk-lore.

FIFA is already commemorating that unique achievement in their own way when they start the online sale of the Under 17 World Cup at 19:11 to commemorate the historic year in Indian football.

To honour Habul Sarkar the jersey will have Habul Sarkar’s picture on one side and the KMC logo on the other side. It is a first of its kind gesture from a government entity to honour a footballing legend.

The team would be playing in the qualifying round of the IFA Shield to get a chance to qualify for the main round.
