After a long episode of drama and discussions, it seems officials from East Bengal football club are seriously considering the prospect of joining the Indian Super League. Heineken, the group which owns Kingfisher, East Bengal’s principal sponsors, have forced their hand to such an extent that their management has accepted the “Invitation to Bid” document that was released by the FSDL (Football Sports Development Limited) a few days back. The Kolkata giants will be sending some of their representatives to Chennai to meet Sekhar Ramamurthy, the director of Heineken, to finalize the move.

IMG-Reliance and the All India Football Federation has been forcing the I-League clubs to accept the ISL as the top-tier league, and they have made underhand moves to establish their superiority which includes granting AFC Cup slots to the ISL teams. Under such circumstances, even Mohun Bagan will be picking up the aforementioned documents. Although getting the documents do not necessarily mean that the clubs will be participating in the ISL, picking up the documents definitely signal a change in intentions among the top brass. While speaking to Xtratime, Mohun Bagan official Srinjoy Bose said,” Yes, whatever the East Bengal officials are saying, is true and they will send us the copy of the document to go through the matter. But collecting the form has no connection with playing in the ISL. We are firm on the claims we have placed and until those things get sorted, we can’t assure anything about our participation”.

It remains to be seen as to how this situation is resolved.
