I-League-ISL Merger: Kolkata Giants Reject IMG-R's Draft Proposal
Kolkata giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan have rejected IMG R's draft proposal- which highlighted the necessary sacrifices that needed to be made to take part in the ISL- thus casting a shadow over the elusive merger plans between I-League and the Indian Super League. Both clubs have deemed IMG R's proposal as 'unacceptable'.
According to the proposed draft, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan will have to sacrifice their club's name, logo, identity, mechandise, among other things for the next 30 years. The draft also suggests that the sponsors will have full administrative control and that the clubs will be handed a meagre 10% of the season's profit.
Both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan officials are on the same page in this scenario are are unwilling to give in to IMG R's demands. Bagan president, Tutu Bose made it very clear that they would not play in the merged league if it "hurts the pride of the club."
East Bengal too are unwilling to sacrifise their identity. The club is also not ready to part ways with their existing principal sponsor, Kingfisher.
Officials from both the clubs are expected to have a private meeting with the IMG R representatives today to further discuss the matter.
With things starting to go downhill, the merger might not see the light of the day- atleast for this season.
