I-League: East Bengal 0-1 DSK Shivajians - Red and Golds' Title Aspiration In Air
East Bengal suffered another humiliating 0-1 loss to DSK Shivajians at the Barasat Stadium in Kolkata on Sunday. Jerry Mawihmingthanga scored the only goal of the match in the 29th minute as East Bengal succumbed to their fourth loss on the trot.
East Bengal gaffer Trevor Morgan made an array of changes to his squad that lost to Mohun Bagan in the derby. Subhasish Roy Chowdhury(GK), Jackichand, Jairu, Payne and Robin Singh were drafted into the starting XI.
DSK, on the other hand, named an unchanged lineup that lost to Shillong Lajong at home.
It was the away side who took control of proceedings in early in the game. The duo of Seityasen Singh and Jerry Mawihmingthanga wrecked havoc as East Bengal defenders failed to cope up with DSK's pace in the counter attack.
Mawihmingthanga, however, missed two glaring opportunities in the opening 10 minutes but it highlighted the chinks in the East Bengal armour.
East Bengal looked to crawl back into the game but lacked the finishing touch with Christopher Payne having a nightmare on the pitch. In the 23rd minute, Mehtab's through lob found Payne in space but the Australian failed to reach the ball which was gathered by an onrushing Paul.
DSK, meanwhile, kept the pressure on the East Bengal defence courtesy of some sleek passing moves. Their constant pressure paid dividends in the in the 29th minute when DSK drew first blood.
Juan Quero's curling diagonal ball into the box was headed home in style by Jerry Mawihmingthanga to give the away side the lead.
The early setback triggered an immediate response from East Bengal but a double save from DSK custodian Subrata Paul denied The Red and Gold brigade the elusive equaliser.
In the 45th minute, Jairu found himself in space after brilliantly combining with Borges but his shot went straight to the DSK keeper as the scoreline remained the same at halftime.
Upon resumption, East Bengal looked desperate to score. Morgan introduced Haitian Wedson Anselme in place of Abinash Ruidas in a bid to add more sting in East Bengal's attack.
In the 49th minute, East Bengal found the back of the net through Robin Singh but the referee disallowed it and gave a foul instead.
Payne's poor form continued in the second half as he kept missing chances. In the 53rd minute, Jackichand found Payne in space inside the box but the Australian miscued a shot straight to the safe hands of Subrata Paul.
Payne was eventually substituted in the 75th minute.
In the 83rd minute, Rowllin Borges almost found the back of the net with a sleek first touch from a Wedson corner but the ball was parried away by an alert Paul.
Despite a flurry of attacks, East Bengal just could not find the back of the net as the match finished 1-0 in favour of DSK.
The loss meant that East Bengal have now lost 4 matches on the trot and are stuck on 27 points from 16 matches.
DSK, meanwhile, climbed up to the 7th position with 17 points from 16 matches.
