Kingfisher East Bengal finally managed to break their Mumbai FC jinx as they comfortably beat Mumbai FC 2-0 in the round 6 encounter of the I-League at the Barasat Stadium on Wednesday.

East Bengal’s Trinidadian striker Willis Plaza was the star of the show as his brace (10’, 17’) helped The Red and Gold brigade retain their top spot in the I-League standings.

East Bengal went with an unchanged lineup that demolished Minerva Punjab in the last game, whereas Mumbai FC made as many as six changes to their lineup.

East Bengal were keen to take their winning streak to 5 matches and they meant business from the first whistle.

Plaza initiated the scoring in the 10th minute when he brilliantly chested down a Rahul Bheke cross from the right wing, making a mockery of the three defenders marking him, before losing the defenders with a lovely outside dodge and calmly placing the ball in the bottom right of the goal.

East Bengal doubled their lead in the 17th minute when Plaza exquisitely chested down Didika’s long ball from the left, winning the aerial tussle with Shalum Pires, before unleashing a lethal left footed shot to find the back of the net.

Mumbai FC tried to regroup after the early destruction but failed to pose any serious threat for the East Bengal defence.

Teams went into halftime with the scoreline reading 2-0 in favour of the home side.

Mumbai looked to reduce the deficit in the second half as they conjured some good moves and even found the back of the net through Densill Theobald in the 57th minute, but the linesman had raised his flag.

Mumbai FC were unlucky to not find the net in the 84th minute when a Shilton Dsilva header was parried off the line by East Bengal custodian Rehenesh TP.

Mumbai FC’s brave attempt at a comeback did not bear fruits as they failed to disturb the scoreline.

The scoreline remained 2-0 after the final whistle in favour of East Bengal as they picked up yet another valuable 3 points to extend their lead at the top.

East Bengal will next host Chennai City FC on Sunday, while Mumbai will travel to Punjab as they will be locking horns with Minerva on Saturday.
