Atletico de Kolkata End Partnership With Atletico Madrid

Wednesday, 5 July 2017|Abhranil Roy

Indian Super League team Atletico de Kolkata have ended their agreement with the Spanish side, Atletico Madrid, if reports are to be believed. The 3-year partnership was no longer tenable, and has been scrapped with immediate effect.

The Los Rojiblancos had been involved with the Kolkata franchise from the inception of the league and had provided both on-field and off-field infrastructure, which included pre-season trips to their facilities in Madrid.

However, the club has failed to draw any profits from their investments, and as such had asked the ATK management to bear a portion of their losses. The officials of the Kolkata franchise refused to do so, and as such Atletico was left with no choice but to withdraw their support.

However, the Kolkata team will be called as Atletico de Kolkata though, as they have retained their naming rights.

There were reports of the side talking to English Premier League teams like Manchester City and Liverpool for a potential tie-up, but it seems that majority stakeholder and industrialist Sanjeev Goenka has decided that they should build a team on their own and not rely on foreign sides for support.

Such a decision is also based on the fact that the ISL will be a much lengthy tournament this year, and will include not 8 but 10 sides. The Kolkata side, which has won the tournament twice is now looking to find a suitable replacement for departing head coach Jose Molina.
