Aizawl FC Fined INR 3 Lakhs For Crowd Trouble; Club Asks AIFF To Clear Dues

The AIFF disciplinary committee held Aizawl FC guilty of crowd violence in their match on February 25 against Mohun Bagan at the at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium and have imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakhs.

The match had ended in a 1-1 draw in Aizawl after Manandeep Singh’s penalty kick restored parity for Bagan late in the second half. After the game, the disappointed home crowd vented their anger out on the referee and hurled missiles on the ground.

Feeling that the safety of their players had been compromised, Mohun Bagan officials had lodged an official complaint to AIFF on January 27 asking the governing body to shift Aizawl's home matches to some other venue.

The AIFF Disciplinary Committee has finally given their verdict today and has decided that apart from paying the fine, Aizawl FC will have to ensure complete safety and security at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium for next matches, including ensuring closed enclosures of the spectators and appropriate police arrangements to the satisfaction of the AIFF before their next home game. If crowd trouble still persists then AIFF will hold the next or any other subsequent match behind closed doors.

Meanwhile, Aizawl team manager has been imposed with four-match stadium ban.

However, club president Robert Royte has asked AIFF to pay Rs. 57 lakh owed to them since the 2015-16 season. “The AIFF owes us Rs 57 lakh that includes runners-up prize money of the 2015-16 Federation Cup, some Man of the Matches awards and travelling allowances. Let them pay us first,” Royte said.

On asked whether they would pay the fine, Royte said, “We will think whether to appeal or not. I will have to discuss with my colleagues.”
