Aizawl FC 1-0 Chennai City FC : Aizawl Outclass Chennai City FC; Reach Pole Position

Saturday, 25 February 2017|Abhishek Mukherjee

Aizawl FC continued their unbeaten run at home as they outclassed Chennai City FC 1-0 at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Aizawl today, to attain pole position in the I-League standings.

Brandon Vanlalremdika's 53rd-minute strike was the difference maker between the two sides.

Aizawl FC, who were beaten 2-0 in the reverse fixture at Chennai, seemed determined to avenge that loss. Aizawl started the match with a 4-4-2 formation and looked threatening from the first whistle.

A Mahmoud Amna free kick was thwarted away by Karanjit Singh in the 4th minute, denying Aizawl the pleasure of taking an early lead.

Al Amna, meanwhile, wrecked havoc in the middle of the park for Aizawl, combining brilliantly with Kamo and Jayesh Rane. Aizawl looked comfortable with possession of the ball as Chennai strived to get a grip on proceedings.

Chennai got a brilliant opportunity to shock the home fans in the 27th minute when Charles was through on goal but a timely intervention from Kingsley saved Aizawl the blushes.

Aizawl, even though dominating possession, could not initiate the scoring, as the half time scoreline read 0-0.

Upon resumption, Aizawl looked desperate than ever. Khalid Jamil's pep-talk might have done the trick as the 'pocket sized dynamite' Danmawia unleashed a lethal shot on goal, only to be denied by the crossbar.

Minutes later, the Aizawl's persistence paid dividends. Kamo's brilliant lob from the right found a lurking Brandon Vanlalremdika in the box, who made no mistake in slotting the ball home.

With Chennai's resistance being broken, the shoulders started to drop in the away camp. Their custodian Karanjit made some brilliant saves to deny Aizawl from increasing their lead.

The crowd being Aizawl's 12th man, as usual, ensured that the spirit in the home camp remained high with their persistent cheering, singing and Mexican waves.  The jubilant home crowd was just a reflection of Aizawl's performance this season.

Chennai pushed bodies forward late in the game, hunting for the elusive equaliser, but the home side weathered the storm.

The match eventually finished 1-0 in favour of Aizawl, who dazzling home run continued.

With the win, Aizawl rose to 23 points, ascending to the top of the I-League standings, surpassing Kolkata giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan.

East Bengal, however, will get their opportunity to restore their pole position when they lock horns with Bengaluru FC later tonight.
